Topic: green star polyp eating my pom pom Posted: February 22 2007 at 11:45am |
Newbi here...I have a green star polyp on a large rock that is overtaking a beautiful silver pulsing xenia. The pom pom is suffering and has now starting to die. This is in a small 24gal nano tank. Do I have to take a razor blade to the green star polyp? And, how should I go about it...
Will the polyp put any toxins into the tank when I do this?
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

GSP doesn't really release any "gunk" (that is the scientific term) into the water, but taking a razor blade to them will only be a temporary solution to the problem. Unless you can remove every bit of GSP flesh from near the Xenia, it will just continue to grow and envelope your Pom Pom. You could move the Xenia, but also be aware that your Xenia die off may have nothing whatsoever to do with the GSP. Xenia will often go through periods of growth and then die off for no apparent reason at all.

Ditto what Jamison said. GSP grows as a mat. Sometimes you can get under it and then peel it off.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to peel some of the GSP away... It is really starting to spread quickly and I should learn how to control it anyway.
What do you mean by moving the xenia Jamison?
I understand they can un and reattach...but how would one go about doing this?
Thanks again!

I do use a razor on a piece of Tongan branch to keep my GSP under control. If the rock is not smooth, it won't work. I also use Joes Juice on another rock to keep it at bay. JJ melts it pretty good.

You can grab xenia at it's base and pull it off the rock. Place it between 2 rocks and it should attach pretty fast.

The rock they share is by no means smooth...so i don't know which approach I should take. Maybe try a bit of both great suggestions. I will update you all on my progress. I would think that the xenia would be happy to let go and move to a more hospitable location. SO...I think I might give it a small tug to see if it will be coaxed. A section of the GSP will have to be tinkered with as well, since the time is coming for it to be trimmed away from other objects.
Update you soon. Thanks

Diana, next time you trim back your GSP I'd like to buy some if possible.
