Hi everyone!

How long does one usually have to wait to see coralline algae growth?

my tank is going on 10 weeks, have been adding phosphate remover, my alkalinity is 2.8 (I know it should be higher...trying) Calcium levels have always been over 400.

Any pointers or advice?

Thanks,
John

My coralline growth had been quite slow as well.
A few weeks ago, I was told that my alkalinity 0f 6.5 was a bit low, that around 9 would be a better number. I've raised it (with some great advice from Mark Peterson) and now I see coralline starting up in many places.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, maybe not.

Excuse me? Confused LOL

John, why are you using phosphate remover? All algae needs PO4. If you are trying to see Coralline algae growth, stop trying to remove phosphate.

The chemical balance is off. The Alkalinity in your tank is at the bottom of the range. Stop adding Calcium and add more Alkalinity. When the alkalinity rises to 3.5 meq/l (10 dKH), resume Ca additions, but still watch the Alk, because it gets used up quite quickly.

Also, bright white light, like that from 10,000 Kelvin MH lights stunts Coralline algae growth on the topside of the top rocks. The right kind of light, as Adam says, really gives the right energy for growth. In addition to blue light, I found that plant grow fluorescent tubes, like URI Actinic/White and Helios pink PC tubes are also good at growing coralline algae. What kind of lighting does your tank have?

Hey Mark.

I've read in a few places that phosphates stunt coralline algae growth. [:s] It was around .75ppm according to my ambiguous test kit and now they are really low since I have been adding it. I have been trying to control my micro algae that is why I bought this Blue Vet stuff.....it's working though.

Should I stop using it?

Yeah and I'm going to do something about my low Alk. level.

My lighting is an 18 watt 50/50 PC and one 15 watt, 5000 K natural light. My nano has a full spectrum look to it that I like but not quite as blue as others so maybe I will add some blue.

Thanks for the advice,
JOhn
