Has anyone used these lights?  I have a 135 that is a fowlr now, but I am wanting to kept some soft and lps corals.  I have 360 watts of vho on it now. I'm thinking of two 5 foot T5HO at 80 watts, would that be enough light to keep forgspawns xenia leathers, mushrooms?

i picked-up a 24" sls TekHood recently...

i'm currently building the tank that the lights will go with. so, i don't have them setup yet. however if you would like to come by my place to check them out your more than welcome. i can set them over my current tank so you could look at the color/brightness. it might at least give you an idea of the look of the light.

Ross Bagshaw has two of them over his new 180, but his MH's are quite yellow so that the blue T5 HO's aren't that noticable (until you turn them off). He lives near Bird World if you are interested in looking at them. Like most of us, he loves to have people come look at his tank. Just PM or call me for his number if your not a WMAS member or don't have the membership list.

Oh, you asked if that would help keep lps. Certainly. Help me with understanding the setup...is that three 5 foot VHO tubes? What colors are each? Why not squeeze in a couple more VHO's?

The setup on 135 is two 6 ft vho on a 430 Icecap so that would be 320 watts, 1 super Actinic blue and Actinic white.  My reason on the T5Ho is longer blub life than vho and the T5 have more intense light than vho without having to do mh lighting.

What would be the cost of putting four T5 HO on your tank vs. a dual 250 W MH?
You might consider dual MH and make both VHO actinic's, even if it were another $100+
This would make it a perfect reef. but that's me.

I guess I ought to comment that the T5 do not appear to me to put out more light than VHO. Relative to their actual diameter, perhaps they are more efficient, using less electricity per lumen, but I've seen them and they are not brighter; are not emmitting more lumens than same length VHO tubes. I believe Jon posted some numbers that confirm this.
Since they are still a new product in the hobby, I don't know about their life expectancy and output degradation.

BTW - The coral mentioned above will all grow fine under the current lighting. The Frogspawn would need to be at the top of the pile though. Here is an example. This 180 has four 4 foot VHO and two 4 foot NO Fluorescent. Thats about the same, maybe just a little more than your 135. And that said, I can see why the addition of these T5's is of interest, if they are truly longer lasting and more energy efficient than VHO's.

In addition to the soft coral and gorgonia visible in this pic there are SPS (acropora, pocilipora, and scroll coral) and LPS (bubble coral).

Mark suggesting MH... yo Beelzebub, is that ice?

Mark's probably right on this.  Best I can tell, a 4' vho should put out close to 4500 lumen while the T5HO is closer to 3500 - 4000 lumen.  Close but not quite there.  Where T5HO shine is they do that drawing only 54 watts while the vho pulls 110 watts.  You'd need 10-12 T5HO bulbs to rival 2 250 watt MH.  At $30-$40 per bulb, the cost advantage of T5HO kind of dissappears, imo.  But as always, ymmv.
