Sorry to disappoint you
but this is not a bad thing. From my experience this seems to be either a spawning, a splitting or an eating response. Don't be surprised next week to find two where the one used to be.
"Tearing the tank apart" releases tons of food into the water from the detritus stuck in the substrate and settled on rocks. A good storm is a welcome thing from time to time! Periodically take a turkey baster and squirt it down into the substrate in a few spots and around the backsides of a few rocks and then notice coral and small fish feeding on what you've released into the water!
