which corals should I use in a 37-40 gallon tank with
clarkii clown
neon goby
wachman goby
crystal goby
three spot damsal
royal gramma
Have not decided on inverts/clean-up crew, and I want a clam. I have not decided on a light fixture either. Sand will be 3 inches deep. any recimendations on fish, inverts any lights, skimmers, and anything used to keep the tank alive would be helpful. thanks

I wouldn't dare recommend any corals until we know what types of lights you have, or are planning to get. My first advice is look at other tanks and decide what you want. Many people here have different tanks, but they all love their own. So find out what you want your tank to look like first, that will determine your lighting needs, and that will guide you in your choice of corals.
Hope this helps,
Adam

I concur with Adam completely. You have a significant amount of options and opinions available to you. You already have the size tank picked out, now work from there. Start with lighting, then filtration and don't forget the amount of time and money that you can spend on/with the tank.
It appears that you have a start based on the livestock you listed, or is that a wish list? Most of what you asked for assistance on will completely be up to you. The rock your taste, but get cured rock. Personally, I like the base rock I did (Utah rock with some tonga and kalini) then topped it off with branching tonga. But that's me.
I run dual icecap 250's with xm 20k bulbs. I do not run actinics except over the refugium on a reverse daylight. I think that the MH's have enough of the blue spectrum to this point.
But like Adam said, edumacate yourself on your options and make your plan. It will change, so use a pencil when you're writing it down.

I think there have a couple threads with this same theme lately. You may want to look through some of the members tanks to the left and see what they have. And go look at the show tanks of the LFS and see what's on them. Everyone has thier own rules about tanks, so see what you like and go from there.

Depends on what you want it to look like and the dimensions of the tank. I would probably do a 175 or 250 and supplement it with VHO's. If its a very long tank, then you could do two 70 watt MH's and use VHO's. Its up to you. I like 10000K MH and actinic VHO's. Clarkii's are pretty open, but you could get a long tentacle or a bubble.

Siren, I'm curious to understand your starting point. You have already chosen six fish and a 3 inch substrate in a 40(?)gallon tank (width X length X height / 231 = gallons).
How did you arrive at these conclusions?

well mark, I saw a 36, 37, and 40 gallon tanks at aquatic dreams Yesterday (that is where we met and you gave me the card). I liked the size of the tanks and my dad says that when filled it probably won't fall through the floor. The fish I chose by recamendations on the forum on ReefCentral.com

siren, unless your flooring is not to code or it has had some sort of past damage, you shouldn't be limited in tank size within reason. However, you should also get the tank that you want and what you are comfortable with.
On this board, you will find many differing opinions on lighting. Some might tell you that if you can squeeze ten 400 watt MH over a 40 gallon then you should do it (Adam). There are also those that will tell you that simple candlelight is sufficient (Mark). Continue to do some digging around and educate yourself on the lighting, that's a great move. There are way too many options available to you to take someone's word for it. I have tried NO, PC and MH. I am most happy thus far with the MH.
Good luck with your new hobby.
