Topic: Rock & Sand Run? Posted: March 01 2008 at 11:30pm |
Who is up for a Rock & Sand run in the near future?
I know a great place to get rock - you don't need to dig AT ALL - you just hammer off as much as you want!
Myself, I figure I want another 150 lb or so...
Sand? I'm not sure exactly where the spot we went last year was - I know Stansbury Island; after that I wouldn't know where exactly to go. The sand spot last year was great - big "dunes" with no dirt!
For the new tank I figure 200 lb of sand should suffice
These things seem to go best when a bunch of people go at once; helping each other lift the totes filled with rocks or sand.
Let's see who wants to be involved... then we can agree to a date / time that works for all

I am planning to go out as soon as the weather is a bit nice. I hope to be setting up a 120 with my current setup as support. So I could use about 200 lb of sand and 100-200 lb of rock. I have a jeep to use when I am ready but a "caravan" would be good also.

I need some rock and sand for the new 90 and I'd love to go. When are you thinking? I'm getting ready to boogey on vacation so the date(s) would be the telling factor. If you want to push it out until the weekend of the 29th, I'm in for sure.

How about this coming weekend then? I was just thinking of the mud and snow and junk being an issue for now b/c of the recent storm.

I know a great place to get rock - you don't need to dig AT ALL - you just hammer off as much as you want!
Is that stuff porous enough? All the stuff I've ever found cemented to other rocks was very dense and heavy. The pieces we dig out of the mud are the lightest most porous we have ever found.

I can't answer your question about porosity since I have never seen the "mud rock" you are talking about... all I know is the stuff I got was easy to collect and "works" as far as I can tell - since maybe 3/4 of the rock in my 125 is Utah rock and I have never had a nitrate issue or any problems with mineral leeching that i am aware of. And, FWIW, after 6 months in my tank it has "purpled up" better than my $6.50 / lb Fiji rock has in a full year

It looks like we have about 7 or 8 folks interested in going
Now we just need to agree on a date - and a place to meet up.
I would propose Saturday, March 22.
Reasons being these:
1) Right now it is still cold enough to snow and there may still be snow on the ground at the collection site(s)... by the end of the month it should have warmed up to the point where any snow cover has melted away - so we won't have to drive off-road through snow or shovel it out of the way to get at the rock & sand.
2) Adam has pointed out the Idaho Reef Tour is the following Saturday, March 29; so that weekend is out as some of us will be doing that instead.
Of course I am open to other suggestions, so please weigh in with your comments
It would also be great to get everyone to agree on a place to meet up and a time to meet up. This way no one is "left behind" who wants to go and we can be sure on how many will actually be showing up.
A general site would be somewhere close to / off of I-80 as that is the route we will be going. Keep in mind, also that I recommend 4 wheel drive vehicles as there is a some off-roading involved (nothing harsh) and it just seems to be easier to get around out there with 4WD...
So - Let's all try to "get on the same page" and reach an agreement that lets as many as possible go at the same time...

Well, I won't be here on the 22nd. I'll be in Maui getting married and doing some diving.
Would anybody be willing to grab me up about 50-75lbs?
