When my Metal Halides went for a swim in my tank the glass on one of the AquaMedic pendants broke. I called a good handful of places here in the valley looking for a place that sells 1/8" thick UV glass and I couldn't find anyone that does. Do any of you know where to buy UV glass online or locally? Thanks.
I've heard that most of the glass that picture frames come with is UV glass. You may be able to get a picture frame from All a Dollar just for the glass. Or possibly call a framing store and see if they know if they use it or not and get a peice from them.
I tried that approach already. the glass from a frame is generally around 1/16" thick and after the halides had been on for 5 minutes or so the glass broke and fell into my tank which I got to clean out once again . I think that the rate of expantion for the glass was to fast which caused it to break. Any other ideas? I'm going to be calling Valley Glass to see if they have anything.
You need tempered glass. The tempering process makes it much stronger, and able to stand up to such high temperatures as our halides put off. I think there are a couple glass places around that can sell tempered glass... if you search the forum they have been listed before. I'll see if I can come up with them.
Evidently the aquamedic pendants are just too small for local places to cut and temper glass for. Looks like you may need to call aquamedic to get a replacement.
I read on a thread here that acrylic works just as well as glass. Is this true?? (If I remember correctly I beleive the quote said even better than glass...)
Acrylic is better then glass at attenuating UV. It will not melt, but it will scratch and over time haze. It's basicly harder then glass to keep clean.
