Topic: Testing for Magnesium Posted: November 16 2005 at 11:51am |

Does anyone out there test for Magnesium? Do you think it's helpful or even
necessary? Is it worth the money for a test kit? Or, do any of the local stores
test for magnesium? Even better, does anyone have a test kit they don't use
anymore that I can buy or trade frags for?

I have one that you can borrow.
I think if you do water changes, you are probably ok. I have tested a few times and have never been low.
Although I know people that dose mg religiously.

Thanks. Can I just bring my water over sometime to test it? Then I don't have
to borrow it. If I find I'm way out of wack, I will just buy one. Also, is this
something where it's best to test immediately or does it matter that the
water's been sitting for a while?

I would suggest that if you are dosing your tank with any addititve, that you have a test kit for it also.

I have a test kit, but don't test very often (and hardly ever have to add Mg). As a general rule of thumb, if you're using Oceanic brand salt, your magnesium levels are going to be through the roof (well over 1400 ppm). If you're using Instant Ocean brand then your levels are going to be on the low side, but still acceptable, imo (~1200 ppm). All calcifying organisms incorporate some magnesium into their calcerous skeletons or shells resulting in a decline in Mg. Granted, it is a pretty small amount, but if you're keeping sps/lps, periodic testing of Mg is prudent, imo.

Jon, since you're a lot closer to my house, do you mind if I just come over
and test sometime? I just want to know where I stand. I do use Oceanic salt
and have some LPS and a few SPS but my calcium is way low. Something I'm
trying to fix right now. Hence, the posts about the Peladow. Besides, I'd love
an excuse to see your tank again sometime.
