I setup a 20 gallon in the kids room on carpet.  The stand is sturdy but with the tank full it is top heavy.  With the tank's small size and small footprint it feels a bit unstable.  A good push could knock it over.  Not sure if the carpet and mat will flatten more within the next couple days or if it will always be like this.  What have you guys done to stabilize your small footprint tanks on carpet?  Tank is level.

I would attach the stand to the wall if you are worried at all about tipping.

Tapping a shim would make it slightly un-level and it's about 6 inches away from the wall for HOB accessories.  What is the best way to attach it to the wall?

We just started the tank with nothing in it.  I might even take it down and lay a small section of tile.

I'd use an earthquake strap; I have seen a lot of furniture pieces come with them. I bet you can find them online. They should hold the stand upright, but even then it sounds like if it bumped, it'll leak water.

I assume they will hold your tank fine since most pieces are furniture are heavier than the 250 lb -ish weight you are around.

Plumbers tape (metal strip with holes in it) and sheetrock anchors will do the trick. You can pick both of them up at Home Depot for a few dollars.

I know exactly what you mean. Kids get playing... oops, Dad we knocked over the aquarium! Evil Smile
Accidents happen. I wouldn't take the chance.
I would move the tank to a table or dresser, A 20 gal weighs about 200 lbs. Sit yourself on the table or dresser to see if it holds you and you'll know it will hold the tank. Smile A 3/4" piece of Melamine board (my preference) or plywood would ensure the dresser doesn't bow on top.

Thanks for the advice.  We had a 10 gallon on top of his dresser and then decided to upgrade to the 20.  The 20 made it bow on top so I drained it and bought a stand only to find it less sturdy than the dresser.  Didn't think of placing a piece of plywood on top of the dresser.  I'll use some plumber tape for now.  I want to rip up his carpet and lay some wood floor but that will be later.

But hey, I am super excited for another tank in the house.  20G High, Aquaclear 50 HOB, 1 powerhead and a 2 bulb Coralife T5.  Going to make it a softy tank.  It's looking great!
