My tank is mostly acans at this point, they are all doing really well without a skimmer but I decieded to get one anyway, my question is do you think acans do better with or without a skimmer?

You will get some people that say acans love dirty water, but I have never found a coral that prefers polluted water. While they may be more tolerant of organic waste than other corals, it is always better to keep your water column clean.

I run an extremely low waste system and my acans are growing like weeds.

+2 to what Pete said.

There really isn't a time when I don't recommend a skimmer - except maybe the smaller nano tank systems

Eh, I'd still skim it. Depends how frequently you do water changes and what your bioload is like ultimately.

Perhaps I'm being presumptuous, but probably no person here has had more experience than me with non-skimmed vs. skimmed tanks. A skimmer makes a tank grow and look different. Adding a skimmer when the coral are doing well will make a change in the the tank that you may not like. Yet your very words seem to be a challange. Are you willing to risk it?

" [the coral] are all doing really well without a skimmer but I decided to get one anyway."

If you like the look of your tank now, be prepared for a change a little while after an effective skimmer is used. I'm not saying the change will be all negative, but since coral thrive with consistency, some of the coral may decline after the change.

Just my 2 cents.

Corals most definitely do like consistency.

I feel like skimmers draw out waste slowly enough that it wouldn't cause a shock to the system. I personally have never seen a decline in coral health after adding a skimmer. Guess it all depends on the quality of the water before you add the skimmer. When I worked at aquatic dreams, they added an 8 foot tall skimmer to their system. Coral health increased drastically over the next week.

Has anyone else seen any negative impacts when they've added a skimmer? I'm curious now.

When I got my first skimmer eons ago I wasn't aware of the break in and left it in my sump close to the edge of the sump. When the cup overflowed it spilled over the edge of the sump covered my floor nicely which emptied water from the tank which exposed corals to the air (lost quite a few). Negative impact from adding a skimmer.

More specifically, my experience has been that some coral, having grown accustomed to the nutrients available in a non-skimmed reef, actually slow their growth. I cannot remember any specific deaths resulting from adding a skimmer, though they may have come after a month or two, mainly just stunted growth initially and later a noticeable change in structure and color.

Overall though, skimming makes a change for the better.

One of the most useful benefits is how the Skimmer may save the tank from a crash, if and when significant death occurs.
