Topic: glass on lights broke!! Posted: July 21 2005 at 11:18pm |
Anyone ever had the glass on their lights break from the heat?
Just minutes ago I hear a cracking sound and the aquamedic fixture that
has 250w MH breaks. Glass all over the tank . Now I need to find a replacement.
Eric can you help me with this?
At the time I'm hearing this crack I'm putting a yellow choris into one
of my smaller tanks. I see him swim, I go running to my other
tank, return later to see how the choris is and he's gone!!! Did
he jump already? 25.00 dog snack? Da** fish anyway.
Oh, then I'm looking on the ground for him and I find my six line 'fish jerky' wrasse.
Let's see if anything else can go wrong tonight.

Wow, sorry to hear that Kellie, you might want to check with The Aquarium or Shaun down at Aquatica, I'm sure they can fix you up. Did the glass go in the tank? I had a similar deal happen to me about three months ago, I heard a loud pop, but luckily it was the bulb inside the pendant, and all the shattered glass stayed in the pendant. Hope you have a better day tomorrow.

You may find the yellow choris tomorrow. They usually sleep under the
substrate. It's the weirdest thing to see when they dive into the sand.

That is good to know. Let's hope he's still in there hiding.
The bulb didn't break but the glass protecting it did. Very
strange. My suspicion is the lights shut off and one off the
tangs got spooked and splashed water up onto the glass protector.

You can go to most glass shops and request a piece of tempered glass with the correct measurements. The tempered glass blocks the UV just like the original that came with your pendant.

I buy glass at home depot, and I recently had a piece break on me. But that was the first time and so far the replacement is fine.

It's easier to go to a frame shop to get your glass. My sister happens to own
one so I just had her order me the piece of tempered for me.
Glass from home depot eh... I'm assuming it's not tempered if it's cut to
size, and I'm assuming it's not cut to size if it's tempered
I ran non tempered glass about 6" from a single 250watt HQI and a week
later I had glass shard in my tank

I've ran a non-tempered shield for the entirety of running a single 250 HQI w/o any problems, but would feel safer if it were tempered... might as well do it right the first time.

Out of curiosity what thickness is your Non tempered glass?
Mine was fairly thin, 1/8" which I think attributed to it's breakage.

I buy (and have for years) the 1/8" plain old glass at home depot. Then I just cut it at home and stick it under my light. I guess tempered is better but I've never cared. (edit- actually I'm not sure if it is even 1/8, it may be more like 1/16)

Cool...
Must've been that my canopy was fully enclosed building up a bunch of heat.
Oh well... I don't even use that lighting setup anymore...

The yellow choris lives!!!! Yippee.
Any glass place will sell tempered glass. Anyone have any
recommendations in the south end of the valley as far as glass
companies?

I called Hillcrest glass and they can't get a tempered piece of glass
less than 9 inches in one direction. This glass is about 7 1/2 x
4 1/2 x 1/8.
Xacttech,
You mentioned your sister has a frame shop, like picture frames? Can she get special ordered sizes?
Maybe I'll have to go with non-tempered. I noticed without the
cover the corals were extremely un-happy. Too much uv?
heat? I'm not sure. That was even with the fixture raised.

Kellie,
Call Tanner Glass (right up the road from Eric's place).
I work with the owner's wife.

Hey Kellie, don't run your lights without glass if they're HQI...
It will hurt you and your animals...
It's the equivalent of looking at a welder without wearing a hood...
That said...
She (My sister) can get special sizes ordered, or she can cut you whatever
size you want in non tempered.

Thank you so much for this information!!! I won't run the light until I get some glass under it.
I found another glass shop in slc that says they will cut it to the
size I need and send it to be tempered. If that doesn't work out
then I'll contact Sanders.
Thanks again to everyone!!!
