I am looking to get some rock for my project, I have heard of Lace Rock being a good alternative to the more expensive fiji or Reef Saver kinds.  Are there specific characteristics I should be looking for when selecting lace rock?  Or locations where I can find it at a good price?  Am I way off an should I be looking for a fiji or something like that.  I don't need anything that is "live", I plan on seeding it from an existing tank, so just base rock to start.

Any suggestions?
That's what she said!

if you are doing a salt water tank do NOT use lace rock.  I tried it, and it leeches stuff into the water and causes massive amounts of algea to grow.  I would steer clear of it and get some rock that is salt water compatible.  Lace rock is excellent for fresh water tanks, but not ours.

Click on and read the link below in my signature line and then let me know if you would like to use Utah Rock. It has been used successfully for over 12 years. I have plenty here in Murray. I go out and get it so you don't have to.

I would say you are good with any, but if you do get Utah rock just make sure to get it from some place that is safe. I have used it in all of my tanks (except current one) and have had no issues at all.... But then again I have never collected it, Ive gotten it from Mark or from Turbostud on the board (I dont think Turbo has it any more).

I just dont trust myself to go and find it on my own.

But you DEF can not go wrong with Fiji or Macro rock!
