Could anyone tell me what this weird thing is that is growing on my frogspawn? I picked him up at OCD reefs and didn't notice it until I was feeding the tank tonight. It sucks in like a clam when light hits it. It doesn't seem to hurt the frogspawn but my emerald crab is fascinated with it and won't stay off the frogspawn. Any help would be VERY appreciated. TIA!

If you think it looks like a clam, it probably is. With some marine clams/bivalves, one side grows against the rock or in this case the Frogspawn skeleton. The reason the Emerald Crab is hanging around is probably because the skeleton has some algae on it or because it's eating the Frogspawn. I can see some Coralline Algae on the rock but is there any other kind of algae anywhere else in the tank? If its a new tank, there may not be enough algae in the tank for the Emerald Crab. This is usually what makes an Emerald turn to eating coral.

Aloha,
Mark Hug

Here is an example of a clam on rock in one of my tanks.

Here is another picture. I hope this helps.  .

I am going to go with a harmless (I hope) clam unless you all disagree. Weird hitchhiker but I guess they are ok right?
