Ok so I'm taking the top off of my biocube and I'm wondering what would be best. A screen over the water or eggcrate? If screen, which kind would be best? Just the type that you use in windows? Would the eggcrate decrease the light penetration? Any input would help.

Yes egg-crate and window screen will both decrease the amount of light. The best topless cure is clear plastic 1/4" netting. You can get it from Bulk Reef Supply (or maybe someone on this board has a little extra to share).

Sabeypets, what is a good way to keep the netting in place? 1973ford, I'm just afraid of my fish going carpet surfing. How hard was it to make it rimless? Is it possible to do it while fully functioning?

I had a 29 Gallon biocube and considered doing this but went to a bigger tank that is rimless. I used egg crate until I had a very expensive mystery wrasse jump twice... first time I saw it and saved him... not true on the second occasion many months later.
Pretty much most fish will eventually jump- either they are gonna be scared (first time he jumped my daughter hit the tank!) or just for whatever reason will jump.
So- in my experience, egg crate is not nearly big enough as well as being ugly and blocking light. Window screen might work but it too will shade the tank a little. I know that the Aquarium in Sandy sells bulk sheets of a flexible clear plastic mesh. You can go to home depot and build a window screen frame to fit over the tank and then mount the mesh in that. But if your tank is curved at all... thats gonna be very hard to do right. You might look at having someone cut an acrylic frame for you but now its actually going to cost more than 15 bucks... so up to you.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler -A.E. 57 Gallon RImless build in progress check the thread before if becomes boring and just full of nice pictures of colorful coral!

I made a frame from a window screen kit I bought at Home Depot. Then I used large weave tule (bridal veil). It doesn't block as much light as window screen or eggcrate. However, the best stuff is the clear mesh mentioned in other posts.
