Topic: Bangaii Cardinal Posted: February 26 2013 at 12:37pm |
I added 2 Bangaii on Friday. Fairly certain they were wild caught. I wish I would have gotten tank raised. Either way, too late now. :-( So this morning, 1 is missing. Not sure where it went. Anemone may or may not have had a part of the clean up. I will wait to add another, but I DO want a pair. If after a week, the other doesn't show, which sex do I have right now?

You can't really determine the sex of an individual Banggai by looking at it.
Males tend to have a longer dorsal fin, but these often get damaged / bitten off during shipping or in a home tank environment.
The only time the sex difference is obvious is when the male is carrying the eggs in his mouth.
Double check to make sure the other fish is not hiding somewhere. SOmetimes they can be a little shy

I was going to say that one of mine hide out for a couple days while the other was in the open. Now both hang out as expected. I'd say wait for a couple days

just bought three small ones to keep my other one company only to see my first chase the three around the tank. I waited until the lights were about to go off for the night and as soon as the lights went off ,the chasing stopped. The problem is I have not seen the small three for the last three days-no bodies bones or anything I am hoping they are still hiding but I am losing hope. By the way my first was at least four times the size of the others, it has been very pieceful fish until now!

I bought 4 at once... And all 4 disappeared for over a week... Just give them time. Mine are now out in a school everyday.

Found bones. :-(
Those crabs sure do clean up quickly huh?
Adding a new one now. Hopefully I'll have a pair.

Bummer! Check that link above for sexing. I tried it out on mine last night and it seems an obvious thing once I knew what to look for.

I will fatten them up in a few weeks/months and look for the vents. Very cool information.
Maybe my 10 gallon will have a use after all. I would love to breed some cardinals for local folks so we can save some money. Paid $15 for a wild caught fish. I can't stand the thought of being the reason for these things becoming more endangered than they already are.
Is anyone in the area breeding these?

I have always experienced that these do not like being paired up. They fight a lot and are territorial. I started with 3 and ended up with 1. As soon as the lights go out they fight a lot.

The best way is to get several. Then carefully watch for a pair that is getting along and remove the rest of the fish that aren't friends.

Well shoot. I was hoping this might be easier.
If these 2 don't pair up, I'll have to add 3 or 4 and go from there.
Thank you all for the help.

Argh. I've got 2 males. I will return the newest member and look for a female. I hope they are willing to feed heavily so I can determine the sex before I take it home.

Fish 4 u has a breeding pair and sell the offspring whenever they are available. I have heard the only true way of telling a sex of them is by the jaw structure of the male
