What make quarts sand not as good as reef sand?

Quartz sand is great for fresh water, I used it for years. The problem for reefs is it has zero calcium content, nor will it ever so it will not buffer tank or be the proper sand for critters and other live things that live in saltwater. While I am sure it will at some point become live, there are other options. Utah sand is cheap to get and has worked great in my tanks for years now. I actually prefer it over most store bought sand (as long as you get the quality stuff)
