Hi.  These two barrel shapped hollow things are growing on my rock.  Does anyone know what they are?  I've circled them in blue in this picture.

If they kind of look like a pineapple, then they are sponges. It's really hard to see from your picture, but I would guess that is what you are seeing.

Oh ok.  That makes sense.  Except they did close their orphases once.  Can sponges do that?

Some of the sponges I have had sometimes open and close their openings. Here is a good resources to browse regarding sponges and a link to an image of the sponge I think you have.

That is a Sponge, but not Pineapple Sponge.
Some Sponge grow as barrel or several barrel shapes together
Other sponge is called "Encrusting Sponge" as it covers the underside of LR, even cements pieces of LR together as it grows between them.
Sponge is a very good animal to have growing in our tanks.
It helps purify and bring stability to the reef.
The older more mature tanks are that way because of Sponge growth.

Here is the Scypha/Pineapple Sponge.

Here is a reddish multi-barrel shaped sponge I recently found on LR collected near the shore.

Here is a green Encrusting Sponge in a pic which shows the way it looks on the rock. The colors most often seen in our tanks are white/gray, black, Orange, and Maroon.
