Does anyone know enough about skimmers to tell me how to make sure it's doing it's job well? I have an ASM designed to skim a 300G tank. I always hear people talking about the 7 ounces of coffee dark skimmate their skimmers extract every day. Mine is more darkish green and takes about 2 weeks before I have to empty the collection chamber. I know I'm overfeeding right now and would expect the skimmer to be going much stronger than it is. Do I have a lemon skimmer, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks again!

Its hard to say.  There are many variables that affect how much skimmate you get from a skimmer.  The amount/size of bubbles.  The contact time the bubbles have in the skimmer body.  The water level in the skimmer body.  The amount of nutrients in your water.  How much you feed (which you said is on the heavy side)?  How much flow you have going through your skimmer?  I haven't had any experience with ASM skimmers...Could you post some specs from your skimmer?

Venturi?  Flow?  Recirculating?  etc...

Very good question!!! I can't wait for someone to answer it. I have an asm g-1 that I think is working well but I don't get alot of skim either but it is very dark green.

I am running the asm g2 but I choose to run the skimmer very wet I can fill the cup in about 4 days.   I try to pull out as much crud as I can before it has a chance to break down.   One downside to that is that I constantlly have to ad salt because my auto top off is always going

Bobn4burton,

My skimmer sits in my 40G sump. I'm assuming it is a G2 also, but I'm not sure. It stands about 2 feet tall and is about 9" in diameter if I had to guess. It does have a venturi. When it comes to anything technical, electrical, mechanical - I'm at a bit of a loss. Calfo highly recommends the ASM and says it works great. I just don't tend to get the "sludge" out of my water that others report. The skimmer generates millions of microbubbles, which float to the top, turn into foam, and spill over into the collection cup. When I get home, I'll try to find and post some specs. I've consisered running mine wet too, but worry about salinity and overfill issues.
