LOL Bring on the hair algae.

Over feeding your tank will provide an abundance of nutrients for algae to grow, but it messes up your water quality and hair algae sucks up the nutrients just like the macro algae.  Not a good choice.

Most of your macro algae will do just fine in a tank.  The only issue will be which of your tank mates will find them delectably.  I had an emerald crab that will consume enough of it that it would not grow in my refugium.  Unfortunately or fortunately, it died so I now have it growing.  Aside from that if you use tap water for your top off it will supply some of the nutrients they want.  If you want to help enhance their growth there are several products out there that can assist with that.  On my mangal I use an iron & manganese supplement.  Also with the various macro algae available it is important to keep them trimmed and such in case one goes sexual and dies.

Here is a hobbyist in Utah that does exactly what you are taking about.  Check out her website. http://www.suzysreef.com/

I grow Ulva, Gracillaria Hagi, and Red Agar.  I have an extremely difficult time growing Ulva in my tank simply because EVERYTHING eats it.  Crabs, snails, down to little pods...not to mention my fish.  It just does not grow fast enough.  The red Agar is almost that bad, but thankfully it grows quickly slightly faster than everything eating it.  Hagi is somewhat calcerous, so not much eats it (but some larger fish will).

Macroalgae like Halimeda, "shaving brush", and "mermaid's fan" should all be fine for your application.  I'd avoid algae like Caulerpa as it will quickly take over your tank.
