I picked up a Mystery Wrasse from a member here and he is in my TANK!

ClapSmile

He is about 1-1.5 inches and beautiful.  I note the following.

He could care less about our peppermint shrimp that are 2x his size (and down the line if they stop growing and he takes them out I guess I knew the risks)

However, he is displaying a very, very strong tendency/desire/hope to assassinate my  Nassarius Vibex snails.  He has all ready made 2-3 serious plucks at their siphon although thus far the snails have simply retreated and waited a bit only to move along doing their business.  Thus far he has not noted the dwarf cerith, florida cerith, or Nerite snails (which are a LOT bigger).

So far he is not interested in mysis or a frozen reef blend but its only been 2 hours and he is a very healthy looking fish so I am not concerned.  Anyone else have one of these decimate a clean up crew?  He seems interested in the hermits as well, but after one gave him a charge he decided to pick on less pointy objects!  (pretty funny, mystery wrasse approaches hermit gets in his face only to get a pincher for his efforts and retreats hastily).

Anyhow, I think he stays regardless and I will just buy more of whatever he does not eat as I have entirely too many snails in the tank now anyhow.  Just curious if others have seen this type of feeding behavior, its hardly unusual for a wrasse (I know one Coris wrasse at a LFS with a SERIOUS hermit addiction).

Anyhow, our intention was to catch the McCoster's Wrasse and return him to the store since he was a pretty boring fish, so we got the Mystery with this idea.  The funny thing is, now the McCoster's Wrasse is getting all showy displaying his dorsal fin, flashing and getting super bright colors!  Now my wife wants BOTH!!@!

Do you think (I DO) that were overstocked?

I run a skimmer, a big Cheato ball on a reverse light cycle, and do 20% H20 changes weekly with no plans to lengthen this (its like 30 minutes of work and its fun anyhow).  The tank has a HUGE amount of rock for a 29 gallon, probably 40 lbs.  We have a bunch of corals that are taking off, our birds nest has 20 new tips on it, the Torch is splitting, the Zoas are growing like crazy, and the leather just went through long phase of being closed a ton, only to show 2x the number of polyps suddenly (the new ones are still very small and kinda white), so things seem to be doing really well.  I feel like at their current sizes were good, but how long do you think we have????  Or are we going to be ok long term with a good maintenance schedule.

I know that I can easily export a fish if I need to but don't want to risk a tank crash by pushing the envelope.  With this much rock and skimmer with refugium are we ok?

For what it is worth. I soaked frozen brine in garlic and he ate it at about 2:00pm today.

I can see no problems with what you are doing, though the weekly water changes aren't necessary. If you want to test this, simply skip every other week and see the tank continue on it's merry way as though nothing had changed.

With the addition of the second Wrasse, I would keep the herbivorous snails and not worry if the Wrasse eat the Nasarrius Snails, because Nasarrius don't help with algae control. All Wrasse are bug eaters. With fewer bugs yet more food going into the tank, the snails will be needed to keep algae in check.

Have fun. Smile

Thanks,

I will get some brine for him, he was probably full, in a snail trance, and weirded out by his new environment.

I will keep everything for now, as the tank looks very cool with all this life interacting together.  Not sure about skipping H20 changes just yet as it gives me a chance to shake out the Cheato ball (never realized how good of a mechanical filter that is until I shook it one time and POOF debris EVERYWHERE) and to generally make a mess of the tank and pull  a good bit out with the siphon.

I just use the Mini Brine cubes that you get from the aquarium. I bought my oil from Mark Peterson. They are "Solgar" Garlic Oil Pearls.

You are welcome to come by and get a cube or 2 as well as a few pearls.
