I have a slime on the surface of my refugium that I've never seen before. If you get grossed out easily, close this topic right now.
It looks like a big blood clot resting on the surface. It's kind of thick, not viscous. Reddish-brown in color. I can skim it with my fingers and take it off. This is the kind of ooze that I imagine helped form the Earth back in the early protozoan days. (What happened to that hilarious dinosaur theory? Some of the newcomers would LOVE it!)
Friend or foe?

It would look like a sheet of reddish brown ooze. You've seen really big blood clots? That's the stuff. But I can take a picture... it would probably look brown.

It's a growth of cyanobacteria. One of the ways I've dealt with that is to harvest it and the algae underneath. Seems that it mostly occurs when the Refugium is too full of algae. This also means that circulation is impeded; ideal conditions for Cyano growth.

agreed... a definite description of cyano. Cure??? Phosphate reduction and/or 24/7 skimmer usage... at least until the cyano shows to be receding.

Auzzie, Kiwi, So.African and any accent from the UK are cool, IMO. As I say in my business, every lead is a good lead. Do you think they would be willing to send their resume/CV?

I've helped several of them prepare their curriculum vitaes. I even helped some of them translate them to resumes! Wait... you're more interested in their work ethics and history than their minds & bods? Oh, dear. Do we need more lessons?

Hello everyone,
This also means that circulation is impeded; ideal conditions for Cyano growth. |
I've seen "increase circulation" advice regularly to "treat" cyano. Lately I've been questioning it's effectiveness.
If you put some cyano in a dish and agitate the sample, it will of course dissolve. This obviously does not remove the bacteria from the dish. So now I'm wondering: Is it better to keep the cyano dissolved and invisible or is it better to let it accumulate for manual removal?
Typically I would recommend controlling the accumulation of cyano by controlling imports (light, food, etc). But lately I've been thinking that manually removing the bacteria could be a great way of exporting nutrients.
Hope that helps,
Chris

I found current just makes it not grow as fast but then
where there is current it grows taller and more
stringie. If you have macro and a refugium I don't get
it that is what helped me is the macro. I guess if you
only have a little do what chris said and pull it out or
suck it out with a turkey baster.
