Topic: monoco Oceanographic Museum Posted: December 01 2004 at 1:43pm |
Hey everyone! Its been a while since I have posted anything since
I don't have a tank anymore but I wanted to share something with
everyone. I just got back from a trip to Europe. While I
was there I went to the Oceanographic Museum in Monoco. It was
amazing! I took about 20-30 pictures that I will be happy to
e-mail to anyone who wants to see them. They are too big to post
here though. I saw everything from Morray eels, huge lions,
Nautilus, cuttlefish, sharks, jellyfish, sea turtles, and much
more. Just e-mail me [email protected] and I will reply to
you with some pics. See ya!

I am having a hard time getting the pics compressed so I can e-mail
them. Does anyone know how big of an attachment comcast will let
go through? I am trying to use Winzip but it doesn't seem to be
shrinking it very much. Any ideas?

Marcus- I think lots of people would like to see them. I suggest posting them here to save on emails.
Otherwise, add me to that email list.
Thanks

Marcus, it's good to hear from you again! There are many image resize programs that are free to use that will do the trick. Search here for "Microsoft Power Toys", the link is in one of those threads. Then post 'em here!
Monoco... isn't there a nude beach there?

The Aquarium was incredible. All the corals were real (not fake
like in some California Aquariums). I couldn't use my flash and
some of the pictures didn't turn out as clear as I wanted but you
should still be able to get a good enough idea of what they are
of. I have wrote a couple words about each picture.
1. part of a huge 2 story full reef tank
2. large sharks in one preditor tank
3. six foot guitar fish
4. preditor tank pic
5. another reef tank
6. flying guinard
7. a wierd lobster and a normal lobster (like my scientific names? hehe)
8. eel back in a hole that wouldn't come out for a pic
9. flounder
10. octopus
11. big morray eels
12. same octopus again
13. this hermit's shell was about 6-7" across
14. pretty gorgonians
15. a hiding huge lobster
16. sun polyps with crappy focus (sorry)
17. more sun polyps (at least I think they are sun polyps)
18. Oysters that were hung on string to help reproduction
19. jellyfish
20. tube anemones
21. cuttlefish
22. more cuttlefish with cucumbers
23. Sneak peak behind employee doors
24. really hard to tell from pic but they are baby sharks
25. more sun polyps
26. huge montipora. This was at the bottom of a two story
tank. They had 10 halides on it and some were 1000 watt and some
were 2000 watt.
27. turtle
28. turtle again
29. cool sps
30. 3' leopard shark. the bannerfish were right next to the glass and the shark was about 6' back from the glass.
31. stonefish, the one in the front wasn't in focus but the one behind is
32. nautilus
33. awesome mini-reef tank
34. look-down jacks (most were 1' long)
35. sting city
36. cool sps
37. preditory tank (lions were over 1' long)
38. snowflake eel
39. Katie's hand on the glass trying to show the size, he was about 15" long
40. sps tank
41. upside down jellyfish
42. pinecone fish
43. nautilus again
44. GIGANTIC Green Morray eels!!!

There you have it folks! Now you never have to go to Monoco, just
kidding! These pictures don't do it justice. It was amazing
along with the rest of France, Italy, and Switzerland. Its
especially fun when your girlfriend says, "Yes!" to a proposal on top
of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Have fun everyone! If anyone
really wants the pics on a higher resolution, send me an e-mail and
I'll make you a cd or something.

I don't know if it matters to anyone but I believe this is the Monaco Aquarium where Jaubert developed the Plenum NNR(natural nitrate reduction) System which is now so famous/infamous. His work was the beginning of my personal foray into the technical aspects and long-term benefits of proper filtration. See the article in the Sea Star Online

Jaubert is shaking his head in disgust..... even to reef fanatics like Jon, Monoco will be known for the nude beaches.

Thanks Sean!!
I don't think there are any nude beaches in Monaco because there is no
beach there. The country of Monaco is only 1.95 sq km with a
pop of 32,000. Check out this picture:
That is the whole country. Monaco does have the highest income
per cap in the world. But, Cannes and Nice are not far and they
do have topless beaches. November is a little chilly for the
beach though. I think we were the only people putting our feet in
the Mediterranean. (It turns out I have been spelling Monaco
incorrectly until now aslo, oops...)
