Check out this pic of monti cap I have really been digging. I almost lost it a just over a month ago after a water change. I'd been very slowly lowering my ALK to gear up for probiotic Vodka dosing and somewhat ignorantly did a water change with some Reef Crystals that I was trying to get rid of (as opposed to my normal Oceanic salt). Little did I know that Reef Crystals, if mixed to their recommendation, is ALK 13! Well, this spiked my ALK from the low 8s to 10.6 with a 10 gallon water change on my 120G tank!
This monti was growing very niceley (hard to tell from pics, but to edge of skeleton, it's about 6 inches diameter). It RTN'd overnight and I thought it was a gonner. Only the extreme back end retained a small hint of red/pink. Well, about a month later, it's come roaring back, growing over its own skeleton. It now appears as thoug the growing edge will depart from the old skeleton and branch out.
Needless to say, I'm back to Oceanic, which has an ALK of 8.5 It's amazing how a less than 10% water change can so heavily alter your ALK. Even with Oceanic, a <10% water change will raise my ALK from 7.9 - 8.0 to about 8.4.
Just thought I'd share....
