So I got sick of using a hydrometer because I never trust its readings and decided to break down and get a hydrometer.  Bought one of the "buy it now" ones off Ebay from a respectable seller.  It's the RHS-10ATC model and had 10 star reviews, phenomenal ratings on reef sites, etc.

So today it came in the mail and I got all excited to take it home.  Filled a cup with RO/DI water and another with tank water to let them equalize at room temp.  Followed the calibration instructions to a "T".  Nothing

I'm supposed to be seeing a blue range and a white range very clearly like the pics below right?  Nothing, the whole thing is white.  I adjusted the calibration screw all the way down, all the way out...nothing.  Then I tried it with the tank water and got the exact same results, nothing...all white.

What am I doing wrong?  Or did I just get a dud, warped unit??

Have you put it directly under a light bulb. Usually a 6500k works for me anyway.

Look at it towards a bright light/sun if you can't see a reading I would say it's a dud. I have one that may be the same one I have it looks like it, very easy to read.

That image is funny. I like it. I've felt that way myself the last few days.

Just for the record, a hydrometer that is calibrated and then kept clean by rinsing in freshwater after each use and given a periodic vinegar bath when it starts to look cloudy, is just as useful as a Refractometer. Yes, it is.Approve

I guess the other thing that comes to my mind is that people worry too much about salinity. Between 1.022 and 1.028 is just fine so long as it does not get raised by oh, let's say .005 in less than an hour. (I'm not sure why, maybe it's the action of a big rain storm, but a fast decrease is no big deal, like when adding a lot of freshwater for topoff).

So you can stop fretting. It's okay. Don't worry. Be happy.
Glad you survived the operation. Wink Sorry it did not help as much as you hoped. On the bright side, your tank looks good. Big smile I'd like to drop by sometime to see it in person. Hug

I have the same exact one and absolutely love mine. Makes testing a breeze. When I got mine from the seller it was almost spot on when I calibrated it. I would say yours must have gotten rung pretty good or something. I'm sure they will get you a new one. And if not, just contact ebay. They will take care of you, they seem to take better care of the customers than the sellers from what I have heard.
