Are you sure it's not because of underfeeding? I'm sure we can find you some great durable fish.

I don't understand. I mean if I can keep a few alive then anyone canLOL. Usually I have poor luck with this kind of stuff but so far success! I don't mean to make you feel bad though.

Give us a list of the 20 you had and the 4 that are left. Maybe we can see a trend of some sort.

Mostly tangs, some chromis, Wrasses.
Still have 1 chromis, 1 tang (yellow eye),1 clown, 1 coral beauty.
I really think I have a black hole in my tank, Had 2 medium tangs disappear over night
They never were found and I tore the tank apart.
What could kill 2 large fish just over night?

How large were they? You haven't ever noticed a clicking sound in your tank at night have you?

This is probably a dumb question, but do you have any ammonia register after these fish vanish? And are ALL fish disappearing or just some?

That is strange indeed! Maybe try some firefish. Super durable and cheap to boot. I think they are about $10 at LFS, or I can get you some when we bring in your chalices.

How well does everyone eat? What is their activity level and where are you buying the livestock (LFS or another source

I'm really suprised that the chromis died. And I can't begin to imagine where they vanish to? Do you have a cat?

Well no new ideas, but you won't go wrong if you have Steve bring some in for you. Definitely high quality. The ones I got from Steve are still doing fine, except for the one that jumped out. Didn't see him for an entire day, then I looked BEHIND the tank and there he was.Cry  Have you looked behind your tank?

Well what sorts of fish are you into? I can get you pretty much anything. IMO you can never go wrong with some firefish, gobies, jawfish, clowns, or an anthias or two. Bluejaw Triggers are another favorite of mine.

I would really like to get a pair of black clowns, firefish and what ever is going to live. Doesn't the bluejaw eat coral?

Black clowns are great (my favorite clowns actually). Nope, I have had a bluejaw forever now and he has never touched my corals. They are actually one of two reef safe triggers. The other is the Pinktail Trigger.

Chromis are impossible to keep imo. They never live with me. I've killed one fish in the last year, except chromis! Sorry to hear about your luck though.

Jeff, I enjoyed sitting with you, viewing the tank and talking fishy stuff. If I gave you the impression above, then I apologize.
I saw a couple things that could be combining together so that new fish cannot live long in your tank.

The age of the tank
The old sand bed
The overgrowth of irritating sponge
And just today I read that your pH swings from 7.8 to 8.3

You had previously had low Alkalinity as well. You have evidently been running the Refugium 24/7. This is not as good as 12-18 hours RDP.
And there may be more.

Lets try this again, Okay?Smile

I guess I will just have to go without fish because I would never jeapordize my corals (they love my tank)  My alk has never been low, I test everyday! 7.8-8.3 ph is ok in a 24 hr. period.  What's your point? Is my rock too old also?
