I have a ? for you all..

I have a friend here at work that has a 380gal ish pond and wants to keep it Un-Frozen through the winter.. Does she need to get a specific pond heater to allow for the cool temp's? or will a nice ebojager 250 watter work ok? She just wants to keep it from freezing nothing substantial as far as heat..

Thanks

Dan

I'd maybe try IFA and look for horse trough heaters. I would bet they may be a little bigger for what your friend wants to do. But it will only keep it thawed, not heat it. The water will still be too cold for fish to swim around in.

Robs pump died during the winter last year. Instead of climbing
into the frigid cold water, he just threw one of my old heaters in.
It kept the ice from covering the top, the koi got oxygen and life
is good!

You can let it freeze, though. My brother just sticks a pvc pipe
in to get o2 to the bottom, where the fish are. He has koi as big
as a beagle!

I've even seen a huge pond with the biggest koi I'd ever seen. They were at least 3-4 feet long, and all he used was an air pump to keep the water moving. He let the whole pond freeze except for that one little spot. It works, that might be an cheap easy answer.

All that fish "require" in the winter is a hole in the ice to exchange gases, a floating trough heater is plenty. IFA has them for under 20 bucks...I can sell you a pond specific one for 3 times that much though  That is all I ever do or my customers do....works great..
