Topic: EMERGENCY! Posted: April 04 2010 at 10:03pm |
I just started setting up a 55 gallon salt water tank. Half way through the process the middle support in the tank snapped. The glass is bowing out slightly. How urgent is this? Do I need to drain the tank right now? Is that little piece of plastic REALLY that important? How quickly do I need to buy a new 55 gallon tank?
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Hey John, like I said on the phone, drain it down and repair the center brace. You can use a length of glass or acrylic to repair it. Or you can go euro bracing. Some of those guys on RC have done it.
Good luck.

you could get a tie down strap and wrap the top of your tank with it to pull it back together... and if it was me Id replace the center brace ... theres a few adhesives/plastics that will work or Id replace the tank....

lol I just bought the tank XD RIP money. Anyone in the area have some extra acrylic and acrylic weldon kicking around that could help me with my tank? I just want to replace the brace but don't have the tools to do so.
I'm guessing PVC epoxy wouldn't cut it for the fix?

You could also use a scrap piece of acrylic with some nylon bolts/nuts. You can easily drill the brace and acrylic. This won't be the best looking, but if you have a canopy anyway, then you won't ahve to look at it!

I have one that I used super glue jell. I glued a piece of acrylic to it. It has held for 4+ years

Anyone have any spare pieces of acrylic? Or some clamps? I've got nothing as far as tools are concerned. I'll probably try just clamping the tank and gluing the acrylic there.

If you are using glue such as acrylic cement, test the glue (put a drop on the broken center brace and let it dry and then see how tightly it adheres). I repaired a tank a few years ago with this same problem with acrylic and acrylic cement. It worked great for about six months and then the glue joint suddenly failed and the tank had to be taken down. If the glue doesn't hold extremely well to the plastic, use nylon bolts/nuts like Shane suggested to be safe.

I did get it taken care of thanks :) Tank is looking great. But the weldon might not hold as faviasteve mentioned, so I'll probably do a second seal job with some silicon. But for now its doing great! Just ordered some new lights, and this tank should be ready for some SPS in no time. ( bought it cycled )
Special thanks to jcoulter who hooked me up with some acrylic and weldon and managed to come over to help me out late at night. Thanks to him the tank is going good. I was gonna get it fixed down at Aquatic Dreams, but decided it was best to fix it that night instead of waiting over the weekend
