I have read up on them and the general consensous is that they are reef safe.  Any one have real world experience with one in a reef?

I know thefu had one in his nano. I know others have them in reefs too! I have been thinking about getting one the only thing I have heard is that they eat snails and crabs.

I've heard that they're generally reef safe. Keep it fed well and it shouldn't bother your inverts.

There are several Triggerfish that are generally considered reef safe. Blue Jaws are definitely one of them. To add to that list are: Pink Tail, Crosshatch, and my favorite, Sargassum. These fish are generally reef safe, but there is still a (slight) chance that they may eat inverts like shrimp or snails. As a general rule I think you are safe. I had a Sargassum for a while and when I first introduced him to the tank he swam strait for the cleaner shrimps, FAST. I thought he was going to eat them, but instead he just went over to get his first cleaning.

Downhill, how about smaller shrimp like peppermints?  Also, if a trigger does start eating snails and crabs, are they catchable?

Thanks,

Shrimp are give or take. Chances are they wont eat peppermints, in my experience, but if they do, then there isn't much you can do about it. They will eat them in 2 minutes flat...I doubt they would though. catching any fish is very difficult in a reef tank, especially if there is a lot of rock and hiding spaces, but it can be done....IMO I would (plan to) put another trigger in my tank without hesitation.
