how big do mantis shrimp get? how aggressive are they?

Mantis Shrimp are really aggressive. They pretty much dominate a tank if you get one. They will go after crabs, snails, fish anything it can get. Im not 100% on size, but I know some kinds can get up to 8 inches.

how do you find them? I was told that may be the source of a problem I am having but I dont know what to look for. I don know to use a dim flashlight at night but thats it

The mantis shrimp with spearing type claws do attack fish and I have never seen one. The mantis shrimp with smashing type claws will eat snails, shrimp, and crabs.
