Hello all.

My tank has been cycling 2 weeks now (The waiting is just killing me) and today after work I noticed this brownish/yellow growth.  The picture is of the largest one.  There a few spots here and there.  I was wondering if this was a good sign or a bad sign?  I don't recall ever seeing this type of growth in the past.

Your expertise is greatly appreciated.  Thanks! Smile

Diatoms, They are a sign the tank is maturing along. They should be around for about a week or so. A clean up crew will help clear them out.

Sweet!  I was hoping this would be good news. I will pick up a clean up crew and finally have something moving in the tank! Smile

Thanks x100

have your tank water tested before adding snails and crabs. I would say you will want about 20 snails and 20 crabs for your tank. I would also look into getting a Turbo Snail. I love both of mine and hair algae has all but disappeared since adding them.

yeah i just got back from Aquatica and my water is still toxic Cry

I bought some stabalizer and 8lbs of cured rock to hopefully help speed up seeding my rock/cycling.

I saw some turbo snails and they look awesome, I am for sure getting at least 1. Smile

There is no need to wait. Add some macroalgae and turn on the lights 24/7 for a 2-5 days and the cycling process will disappear. Read more about it and other tips here:

Thanks for the awesome tips.  I actually had my water tested today and my nitrates were seemingly at 0!  My phospate was a tad high, but I scored a cleanup crew anyway!
I got some GFO and a bag to hopefully calm it down soon.  I hope to get a reactor soon to hold both GFO and carbon.  Here is a pic of my favorite things ever! Shrimp!  woohoo.

Meet George.

My crew: 1 Large Red Emerald Crab (Sebastian), 1 Peppermint Shrimp (George), 1 Brittle Star and 25 Snails.  They were out of crabs for now, but in a few days I will go get 25 crabs (as soon as the shipment comes in).

LOL  I found if I named the creatures in my tank, I'd be more attached to them.  If and when they die I would be more sad then usual. Cry

Looking good.  I love your shrimp!

Here is what a customer said while on hold Oh my gosh! Did you open the door? I told you not to open the door. Dre is in here completely naked and he's got freak'n Macaroni and Cheese in his hands.
