Topic: Collecting Brine Shrimp Posted: August 04 2004 at 12:02pm |
I thought I would let everyone know that you need a permit for collecting brineshrimp and/or their eggs at the Great Salt Lake. You need a permit because they are protected aquatic wildlife.
The cost is $50 plus $5 handling fee for the first year. Then $25 each renewal. It goes by calender year. This allows you to collect up to 200 pounds of brineshrimp for your own personal use. You get the permit through the Division of Natural Resources Phone: 538-4701. You do not want to be caught collecting without one. And when I'm paying about $16/lb at the LFS and using about 2oz a day, it is well worth it for me. Just thought I would pass the information along.

Brian: The ranger must have been confused because I have the information in front of me right now and just barely sent in my COR today. Call the number above and they will tell you/send you any information that you need.
Shane: I know, it sucks, but it would really ruin your day if you were caught and had to pay a hefty fine and/or jail time eventhough the chances are slim.

Wow! For $10 Mark will sell you a whole bucket full of brine shrimp. Heck for that matter, $10 would buy a whole pack of Adam's Gumbo.

Does Mark have a commerical license? A pack of your gumbo would last me less than a week.

I doubt he has a liscence. And I agree with you, I can go through food fast. However, a pack of my gumbo I gave to Jake will last him... honestly... I'll bet 12 months. In fact, I bet you he has had the last pack I gave him (3 weeks ago) and he hasn't even opened it yet.
So I guess that cost comparison really depends on how much you feed. For me, one ziploc bag is good for months.

Cody, doesn't this rule apply?
From: http://www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/r657/r657-052.htm
(3) A certificate of registration under this rule is not required:
(a) to harvest 200 pounds or less of brine shrimp or brine shrimp eggs, during a single calendar year, for culturing ornamental fish, provided the brine shrimp eggs are not sold, bartered, or traded;

Thanks, Jon . That finally clears everything up. I even told the lady at the Division of Natural Resources, Suzanne, that I was using the brineshrimp for personal use and just for my fish . I called her three times asking questions, and she said I couldn't even have a friend helping me to collect for my personal use when I had the permit. I will still make sure that I have that link printed out and with me when I go.
Adam, I think you would be amazed at how much I feed my fish everyday. All I feed them is brineshrimp and lots of it.

Yeah, when?? Is anyone close enough to the Antelope Island area to know whether there are fat happy brine shrimp there? Mark told me last week that his favorite area has greenish colored water & not many shrimp. I told him that the Great Salt Lake needs to feed less nutrients and reduce its photoperiod. Or add some macroalgae. Ha ha!

After everything was cleared up, I went down to the GSL marina and there was no brine shrimp . Are they only around for a certain amount of time or do they come in waves? If anyone goes down there and sees a whole bunch of brineshrimp could you post here or pm me, thanks.

That's because I was down there apparently just before you Cody. I have about 750,000 lbs of brine in my extra freezer. Would you like to buy some?

Uh, oh! The little red devil's back! Will we owe our souls to Carl, in return for some Bulldog Brine Shrimp?

Jared and I went down yesterday. The harbor is empty. But, if you walk out to the end of the jetty on the north side of the harbor you can get plenty. There were not as many as last month when I went out. We got enough for about 1.5 pounds frozen, and several days worth of live food.
C, I did notice an awful smell out there . . . was that left over from you out there several weeks ago?
