I have a 90g FW tank built into an area in the entryway of my house.  I'm running an FX5 so it's very simple for me to swap a hose and drain out water.  For FW I ran a water line into the cabinet above that I can just pull down for top offs or refills.  When I change this to SW here shortly, I can still use this for topoffs, but I haven't figured out how I want to go about handling the refills of SW for water .changes.

This tank will NOT have a sump, so I don't have ready access to add water without going trhrough the top of the tank.  I'm looking for suggestions for how to go about doing 10% - 20% water changes.

I can't leave a SW container in the area for a couple days to mix and acclimate because the wife would kill me. Dead  Lunking 10-20g of water and manually dumping it will inevitably lead to messes and much less frequent water changes.

I'm sure there are people here who have tanks in high profile areas in the house that aren't fully plumbed.  Can you tell me how you go about filling your tanks for water changes?

How long should SW mix prior to being introduced to your tank?
Can mixed but unused SW be saved for the next water change?

Thanks.

I mix my salt water in a rubbermaid tub.  After I take the water out of the tank I place a hose on a maxijet 1200 place it in the tub and have it pump it into the tank.  Nice and easy with out making a mess.

I have a 35 gallon container under my fish tank that is filled with RO water via float valve (this also auto tops off my tank).

So there is no way you can run a sump and a line for RO water under your tank?

I have no room.  I have a hose above the tank for top off, but below the tank I have canisters.  This pic shows how tight of a fit my tank is.

We have a 55 gal in the wall that we wanted to convert to SW but for the exact reasons you mention we have not done it yet. The clearance is very tight, no way for MH, no sump, etc.

BTW on our 90's we only do 5 gal water changes (weekly). We mix it up in a 5 gal bucket and put the lid on and let it sit with heater and powerhead in it till we are ready. The pic doesn't work for me, but I would think you could take out the canister filters and use a sump instead?

I like using a small powerhead to pump the water up and into the tank.  You could easily mix the SW in a small rubbermaid for an hour or so in front of the tank, connect a hose to the mixing pump and into the tank.

I'm not going to drill the tank and I don't have enough faith in the HOB overflows (or the space) to do something like that.
