I assume it is 24" X 24" X 30" tall then? Are you planning on keeping corals or just fish? If you want corals and they need high light then I would probably go with a DE 250 watt MH. T5HO could work as well.
Yes Mike those are the dimensions on the tank. It will be an all sps tank. Do you think the 250 will be able to hit the bottom for clams or how about t5 how many would I need
I've heard great things about the Lumenarc/Lumenbrite I don't know which one is the proper one for that type of bulb and light spread though. I think Crystal is up on that stuff.
I would run 8 T5s. If you want a fixture then the ATI Powermodule would be your best bet for an SPS tank. Overall the MH might be the easiest. I would supplement with some T5s though.
Ryan so do you think that I will be able to have clams on the bottom with the 8 t5s. It would also be in canopy so I'm think about going to least expensive way.
If you are gonna retro it and really want clams 30" down you would have to overdrive 4 bulbs and make sure the clam is under those 4. That's why I think the MH might be easiest but it may raise your heat a bit plus electricity is more. If you want T5's it would be more upfront but cheaper in the end I think. Just make sure if you decide to go T5 to do it right at the beginning or it will get costly.ÂÂ
FYI, you would want to call Reefgeek and talk to them about it all. Also on Reefcentral there is a huge thread all about T5 that I am a regular on. I believe one IceCap 660 ballast would overdrive 4-24W bulbs. So you would need one of those and two Triad ballasts. You would have three stage lighting and I think that is bad A! You would want the Reefgeek brand reflectors as they are the best out there. You have to call reefgeek to get them.
I would recommend a 400w SE with a lumenarc reflector. Here is a picture of a 90 gallon cube I built (30"x30"x24"). This was lit with a 400w 10K bulb using a simple reflector (not lumenarc). I think Peiji has this tank now.
After I took this picture, I tried a 250 watt DE bulb to light the tank. It was a very weak bulb and could not compete with the 400watt.
In this tank, SPS and clams did best using a 400watt 6,500K Iwasaki bulb. SPS also did well with a 400w 10K XM bulb.
I would steer clear of those units! Current is the only company that makes 18" bulbs and they are garbage. You would only be able to keep SPS up top and definitely no clams if you had that planned. The ATI Sunpower is the best bang for your buck fixture out there. The Tek fixtures aren't bad but you want to cool them with a fan and no splash guard. Or even 2 Aquactinics TX5s would work well for you.

I have a 225g which is basically (3) 2 X 2 X 31" cubes lined up (6 X 2 X 31")... I have (3) 250 MH pendants (Aquamedics) and I run Pheonix 14K bulbs. I have clams on the sandbed doing quite well.
I do not have any other lighting.
Personally I would go with a single 250 DE bulb as adequate. You could go 400w, but IMO you won't need to. Just use a good name-brand reflector and / or pendant and the HQI DE bulb - not a SE bulb.
