Topic: Funny "Worm"? Posted: August 01 2004 at 9:49am |
I fed phytoplankton and brine shrimp this morning and out from a rock came this funny "worm". It is very skinny. If it is bad, I could catch it. Any ideas? It's at about eight o'clock on the screen. It is light brown with dark stripes on it.

Run out of the house as fast as you can and call 911
Actually it's good for your tank.
And thanks to you and CoryK for the little anemone. It's attached to an empty shell and I fed it BS this morning.

I have a bunch of them. I'll bet it is a peanut worm.

I have to agree on the peanut worm theory.

I will have to look up the "peanut worm". The picture was not clear for all of you to look at but it doesn't have bristles on it. So I take it I'm ok? Thanks...Susan

Was that picture taken at night? IME, peanut worms only come out at night and hate the light.

Yep... still think it's a small brittle star... I have a few that live in a scroll/tubinaria that reach out when feeding and look very similar to the pic.

The picture was taken with full lights on. If it's a brittlestar, I don't want it do I? I could always try and grab it with my trusty pair of hemostats (nurses always have pairs of hemostats) and see what I pull out. Susan

If it's a brittle star I'd keep it. Even if it was a worm I'd keep it unless I witnessed him doing something I didn't approve of.
Light on, I'd say it's not a peanut worm.

I'll say if you saw one leg, it is a peanut worm (Sipunculid) and if you saw multiple legs, it is a brittle star (Ophiothrix).

I have occasionaly seen my peanut worms out in the 'day' cycle on my tank. Not often mind you, and almost always in a shadowed spot.

I've never seen a peanut on the glass in bright light. Generally, the moment I turn the lights on they retract immediately. If it's a baby brittle, I've never heard of them doing anything bad in any tank. I even have an 18" green brittle that's been a model citizen. I've heard they'll try to catch fish, but I've never seen him try.
