Topic: skimmer performance? Posted: January 03 2009 at 11:47am |
I have a homemade skimmer and it is taking about 2 weeks to fill the cup. The cup is 5" round by 5" tall. The skimate is really dark in color, I was just wondering if that is normal to take that long or should i be getting more? Its a 75 gallon tank, 30 gallon sump/fuge. The tank has a pretty light bioload, I have 1 hippo tang, 2 chromis, 2 clowns, and about 25 lps corals.

Can you post a pic of the skimmer and the skimmate? It is most likely doing just fine from it sounds, but it's generally better to skim a little wetter it removes organics more efficiently.

also you shouldnt leave it like that for two weeks. the neck gets filled up with gunk. it will skim better if you clean it out every few days.

With mine if the riser tube is not adjusted properly or it was adjusted with a low water level, then when the level is up it will bubble too much water up. I finally found the sweet spot and now I dont need to touch it and I get about 3/4" every 5 days or so.

There are a couple of option depending on your skimmer
*Decrease water flow
*Increase oulet
*Increase air intake
*Increase neck length
