Topic: Reef Tour Posted: June 20 2004 at 7:29am |
I dont understand what the benefits of this are. At the meeting, Adam said it is open to the public. I can see why there would be a reef tour for those in the hobby to see eathothers tanks, but I dont know why you would let perfect stangers in your home that clearly have no interest in the hooby, other then the standard, its Nemo, its Nemo.. Dont you worry that they are looking at more then just your tank?? Has anyone every been robbed that was on the reef tour?
Someone with a true interest would already be on the message board.. Or, visiting there local fish store. If you want to see a great tank, go to the Aquarium, MSM, Aquatica. They all have very nice reef set ups. I would think that would be the place to start.
Isnt is doing more harm then good to encourage people to set up Nemo tanks and thus distroy more reefs in the process. From what Ive heard being at LFS, most want Nemo . They are not concerned or educated in the fact that reefs and fish are being distroyed.
Im not trying to start a debate, Im am just wanting to have someone explain how they see this.. Adam....

I cannot remember anyone ever claiming that they were burglarized. All the people we've seen on almost ten years of Reef Tours have been fantastic. Many have joined the WMAS. Many don't know there is a club until they read it in the paper. The LFS don't know how much the WMAS has benefited their business by introducing so many people to the ease and fun of caring for a saltwater tank.
Many with "true interest" either do not use the www for access to reefkeeping info, or are still unaware of the WMAS.
We originally started the WMAS Annual Reef Aquarium Tour to promote the club through the LFS and media to gain members, and to make $$, but only when we kept printing costs to a minimum did we make any money. We always seem to gain more members because of it.
Because we have plenty of members and are not hurting for funds, for the first time in it's history, the tour is completely free. We'll see how it goes.
It's always a blast to show your aquarium to all the nice people.

Connie,
Good questions. I'll my best to answer them, if I miss something ask me again. Several of the people on this message board joined the club because they came on our Reef Tour. Bottom line- there are a ton and I mean a ton of people out there with saltwater tanks, but have never heard of us. This yearly event really allows for a lot of marketing. A couple years ago I remember Suzy and Arjen having over 150 (maybe over 200) people coming to their houses. Arjen even had a group of home schooled children come and take notes on his tank.
I kind of think our Reef Tour promotes the NON-Nemo tanks. I think pet stores can (thankfully most don't) promote a 10 gal with 20 fish. But when people see our tanks they say "wow, I want a set up like that". You'd be amazed at how many questions people will ask and how "into" your tank they will be.
I'd say the Reef Tour has probably been our biggest recruiting and marketing tool, until this site was taken over by Jake. Now I guess it is our second best marketing tool.
And like I always say, I'll give you 51 Saturdays in a row to see other club members tanks, I only ask you give me 1 Saturday a year where you sit home and show off your tank.

We've have been on the tour every year, and I have felt nervous on
the years Rob wasn't home.....until the people start coming.
Never have my fears come true. The people that have toured our
house have never made me feel uncomfortable or uneasy...
But, we don't have anything worth stealing....And, we have a killer
guard dog!!

I know I joined the club and found this board after attending my first reef tour last year. It does I believe help show people how a good setup can work and gives people interested an idea of what is involved in taking full-time care of a reef aquarium.

I cannot comment on the reef tour and the people who attend specifically, I've never been on one. I did not know that one existed untill after I joined the club. I am going to jump at the opportunity this year. However, I think that Connie's concerns are justified. Who wouldn't be concerned about strangers coming into their home. I think that if you realize that there is some commonality with the people visiting and that they are looking to you to help them with ideas and advice about their tanks, concerns like burglary may not be as big of a deal as you had originally thought. Use common sense when the public is invited into your home. When you sell your home, if you ever have, your real estate agent probably told you to keep valuables out of sight when showing your home.
Out of sight, out of mind.

Ditto! Once they ask about how much stuff costs, they would quickly realize that they'd have to steal some xenia to make it worth their while.
I might move our gramophone into another room, though.

The way I found WMAS was through the Reef Tour advertisements. An argument for both sides .

I can be over in an hour and you are welcome to watch all you want. Grab a soda and some chips. Just don't try to stop me or you'll take all the fun out of it.
Actually, I had thought about this myself. I know there is nothing in my house that anyone would want, but when the word "public" enters the picture you have to be aware that there are a lot of wierdo's out there. My inlaws had a yard sale one time and wanted to sell some furniture they didn't want to move outside so they invited several people in the house to see it. One lady walked around picking up everything in site and tried to get them to sell it to her. Finally she said she needed to use the bathroom and after the sale they found all of thier prescription medicine gone. Just be careful who you let wander around your house. I'd try to keep people, especially children with you all the time.
I'm not going to let things like this discourage me from being on the tour though. I found the club through the tour and at the same time found my new aquarium. It was the first one I saw and I fell in love with reefs. Several months later I went back and bought that tank. Thanks Suzy!!!

We have participated in 3 reef tours. No one has taken anything from the house. Infact, I asked several people to take the garbage out, but they refused.
Seriously all the people I've seen come through have had a genuine interest in the hobby or are with someone who is interested in it and are just sharing the opportunity with them.

Skyetone,
Don't worry you'll get the info. In fact you won't be able to get away from the info. The Reef Tour isn't until September, and it will be big. I'll send lots of emails and this website will have lots of info.
Just keep waiting, and until then, check out the pics from last year <-----------

Connie- No problem, just go on the tour this year.
Rodney, best thing to do is to send a PM with your name, address, phone number, and description of your tank to Gonzo on this message board. Gonzo is Cortney Curran, our reef tour leader.
