For months I have been trying to use primarily skimming, vegitable and LR/LS filtration, now I want to add some AC and phos remover. Is there any bad side effects to this?
History- In the last four months I have done about 3 ten gallon water changes and have not used much AC. I run my skimmer for about 17 hours of the day. I had great algae growing but most of my calurpa in the displays died about 4 weeks ago and it seems like my chaeto exploded because of it. So now I have just little bits of calurpa in the displays but a full fuge of chaeto.
I purchased a phos reactor to put the AC and stuff in and was planning on running it for a few days a month. Could this be bad in anyway?

I have AC in a mesh bag in my sump, I also have a piece of phos remover in there.  I just keep it in there all the time.  I can tell when I need to change the AC because my water doesn't look as clear.  I haven't seen any bad side effects.  Is there a reason why you would only run it a few days a month?  On our 90 we have a phos reactor that we run all the time.

The container says only a few days a month for reef tanks, after that it can take out more good then bad. But that is contrary to what I hear most people do and that is leave it in most/all the time. So I thought I would ask.

My water didn't seem yellow without, so I look forward to what it will look like with.

I run massive amounts in canister filters 24/7 as well as the skimmers 24/7.

We skim 24/7 and AC all the time, phosban occassionally. BUT we are not trying to grow chaeto etc.  Some of our SPS don't like the phosban so we don't leave it in for more than a few days.

Ditto with Dion... a Fluval 404 stuffed full with 2 bags of AC, 1 bag with 150g of pO4 remover, and a small square filter pad as a prefilter to keep any wandering gunk from clogging the media bags - running 24/7/365 and the skimmer 24/7 as well... I change the AC and filter pad monthly; I've gone as long as 9 mos. with the single 150g "dose" of ferric hydroxide before changing it - although that was with the 125g tank. The 225 I'd say every 6 mos. is a safe bet.

Never hurt any of my corals or slowed down macro growth...

Mark / Wendy - you might try starting off with a very small amount (like a tablespoonful) of phosban and working up to a full "dose" I guess you would call it... I don't know that it's the addition of the phosban that ticks off the SPS, but rather the sudden removal of all the phosphates from the water column that a full dose will do that makes them unhappy...

P.S. - Fosters and Smith carries their own brand that's the same stuff as the pricey phosban at half the price (on "sale" now at $ 6.99 and phosban is around $16 - $18 for the same 150g container...)

Thanks for all the input. I am trying different approaches. I've ran some AC and phosgaurd for a few days and I think stuff looks better. But I don't know for how long I should run it. I wish I had a calcium reactor. I do have the tank and regulator, just need the chamber.
