I have also been using it.
Although I have not done any testing, I have had good success with it so far.

Do either of you have a boron test kit? The reason I ask is... the Oceanic salt came out just after the Omega Seas disappeared. I heard that whoever owned Omega Seas had infringed on the Oceanic patent (hearsay only, no first hand knowledge). And the Omega Seas salt was reported to have elevated boron levels. Boron (borate) is a great buffer for seawater and is used in some marine buffer products and at least one other marine salt purposefully elevates it for that reason.

I don't have a boron test kit. I emailed oceanic to see if they had an analysis to share...
Seachem buffers and salts are high in boron but I was under the impression that elevated levels of boron was bad for the system??

Here's there response... although a very fast responce it seem pretty generic.
When 0.29 pounds of Oceanic Natural Sea Salt are mixed in 1-gallon of Reverse Osmosis water it will yield a crystal clear solution with the following results:
· Specific gravity: 1.021 to 1.023
· PH: 8.0 to 8.2
· Calcium: 420 - 460 parts per million
· Magnesium: 1250 - 1350 parts per million
· Potassium: 380 - 400 parts per million
· Bromide: 65 parts per million
· Phosphates: none
· Nitrates: none
I emailed back spacifically asking about boron and got this responce...
No Boron is added, so I do not have available data. However, it may be present in the salt as its primary constituents are harvested from the sea (which tends to remove/lower some ingredients which we replace (i.e. calcium, magnesium, etc.), so its exact presence and amount is not indicated in our testing procedure.
So what does all this mean... I'm not sure .

So what does all this mean...
To me it means that they do not test their salt. And that's a little disheartening that they don't add it. What about Strontium and Iodine? Are they not there? I wonder if other salt manufactures do the same? I kinda doubt it, as most salts are very close to the NSW boron, strontium, and other trace minerals http://web.archive.org/web/20030608135355/http://www.animaln etwork.com/fish2/aqfm/1999/mar/features/1/default.asp . I'm sure Tim H. can answer this when he's here.

I use Oceanic Salt, too. I was using it exclusively for a couple of months. At first, things in my tank seemed to react in a good way, looking better than ever. But then after a while, it seemed like things were not as happy. I didn't really make any other changes to my system. I now alternate my water changes between Oceanic and Instant Ocean mixes. Like everything, I think variety may be good.
I love how the micro-fine Oceanic Salt mix dissolves immediately. Not sure if anyone else has made this same interesting observation... I used a sheet of paper to make a funnel into my water jug, so the salt wouldn't spill all over. Usually, I immediately throw the paper away, but for some reason I just set it on my desk this time. A couple of days later, I noticed that the salt had melted into something that looked like wet glycerin drops all over the paper. Then, after about a week, it completely evaporated. Weird!
The moral of the story... When it says to reseal the container, make sure you do. Something strange happens when it's exposed to air. Or paper? Or me?

In case anyone is interested you will get many graphs and lots of data regarding all sorts of salt mixes during our next meeting. We will have a very scientific presentation regarding salt mixes, so start getting excited.

Jon,
it is to my understandin that omega salt infringed on Instant Ocean salt mix since it was the same chemist who made both salts Oceanic was in the works before all that happend...
Eric, PS, i love the new Oceanic salt

I've read anything above NSW of boron is toxic... although a low boron level can also cause problems. I'll get a test kit when I can and see.
Adam, is Oceanic going to be on the graphs and data?? or is it to new?

Eric, it was IO? I thought it had something to do with the micro small size of the salt grains that got them in trouble.
I'd guess that elevated boron is toxic to some life and not to others. I don't really know, but I like the idea of keeping stuff other then calcium and carbonates at NSW concentrations. But from Oceanic's reply to you I doubt it's elevated. Also, just a guess but I doubt Tim will talk about any salt not made by Marineland. So expect data on Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals. Although, it would be great if he had data on others too!

Do you recall what the infringment was?
Who is backing/distributing the oceanic salt (central garden & pet?)?

Nevermind on that second question. I just downloaded their 10-K, http://www.corporate-ir.net/media_files/NSD/cent/reports/200 3_10K.pdf Yup, they own Oceanic. They also own Kent Marine. I wonder if they'll continue to sell Kent salt?

Hey Jon, the main problem was that when the chemist left (IO) for omega cause omega offerd more money IO said that he used some formula that was IO they are still in court fighting it out and yes they still sell Kent Marine salt...

There was data on like 10 salt mixes. I'm not sure if all of it will be presented, but I'll bet it is. So all brands you can think of, will be there.
