I can tell you my experience with insurance. I could be off by $5 per month on the amounts.
My homeowners insurance (just the regular stuff and replacement cost coverage) is $35 per month (I shopped a long time to find that price ( and I took a high deductible from an independent agent that sells for a bunch of companies). My insurance happens to be with American Concept Insurance (or is that my life insurance)?
My earthquake insurance added another $35 per month (again with a high deductible) and without the brick veneer on my house being covered. I'll pay for the brick myself because insuring the brick is really expensive. It certainly pays to shop around for earthquake coverage and it used to be hard to find. For a few years, my coverage was through Lloyds of London!
I didn't get flood insurance because it added a huge amount and there were so many exclusions. I was poor at the time and should probably revisit that decision. But consider "all hazard insurance" if you want flood insurance. It doesn't reall cover "all hazards," but it is a way to insure you home for the regular stuff, plus flood and a bunch more. Earthquake too? Can't remember.
I'd be really careful in making sure the flood insurance would cover an aquarium disaster. There really were a ton of exclusions.
I sleep a lot better with earthquake insurance and highly recommend it as a sleeping aid in Utah so BRING ON THE BIG ONE! As long as my family and I can crawl out of the rubble, we'll be fine. And I'll even get a new house.
