Topic: Attaching finger leather frags Posted: April 23 2008 at 3:18pm |
I bought a few finger leather frags on this message board, and they were superglued to some shell, but quickly came off. I tried re-gluing them to small chunks of LR and one of them has come off again. Is there a better way? I want them to start growing and looking more alive, but every time they start looking good, they come off.
Any suggestions?

Leathers put off a mucus so superglue gel doesn't stick to them very well. I have had good luck using two part epoxy to encase the bottom of them, rubberbanding them to a rock, and pinching them between two rocks. I've also heard you can pin them to a rock with a plastic toothpick.

The elastic can easily cut right through the leather when it starts to expand, so place the frag in a depression in the rock so the elastic cannot cut it through. Make a cross of one elastic or use two to make a cross over the frag to hold better. The toothpick idea works good. To me, epoxy looks bad.

Hi, You bought the frags from me and I am sorry they came off I ran out of rubberbands to attach them for you. The easiest way to attach them (if I have time and rubberbands) is to do the following: 1. Find two pieces of rubble, ~1" across and a small piece of rubble ~1/4" across. 2. Stick the frag on the big piece and the small piece on top of the cut end of the frag. 3. Wrap the rubberband around the two rocks. This pinches the frag end which then will bond to both rocks.
I have never had this fail whereas with the other ways I generally end up cutting the frag etc.

thanks -- I'll try that. I have a piece of LR that's really craggy -- I shoved some of the smaller pieces in the crags, and I think they'll hold. Just the bigger guys that'll need the rubber band trick.
