Topic: Reef Safe Medications Posted: April 03 2008 at 3:02pm |

K I know even the idea of a reef safe medication is going to cause controversy all over the place... but here's the deal, I've already lost 6 fish. I'm doing everything I can to keep my naso and yellow tangs, and hawk fish from going down the drain. I don't have any corals that are real sensitive, although I do have a fire shrimp, some brittle/serpant stars, anemones, and peppermint shrimp, aside from frogspawn, all of my corals are softies. So if you have personally used a medication in your tank with inverts and corals and had success, please tell me what you used.
Thanks,
Tim
And I know, medication isn't the solution, I need to figure out the problem... and I"m working on that, I'm just trying to cut my losses while looking for the problem.

tim, set up a hospital tank and put some copper in it for a few days--even a rubbermaid bucket would work--and you could fill it with water from the tank as you do a water change and let them hang out in there until they clear up, then you don't kill anything in the tank.

Tim, I assume you are battling ich. The only way to completely remove the parasite is to remove the fish from the tank. The ich life cycle takes about 6 weeks. I'd suggest doing what Crazy Tarzan said and move them to a hospital tank to medicate. The ich parisite in the main tank will die without fish to feed on for 6 weeks. You might want to also try garlic juice and a UV sterilizer to speed up the recovery of your fish.

If it's ich I suggest UV all the way. Otherwise I have used Melafix and Pimafix with not problems in a reef, but they are not true meds just herbal remedies really. If you use these shut off the skimmer first. It will go crazy otherwise.

I have used MelaFix also with no problems. I have all softies. Like Will said, turn off the skimmer because it really will go nuts with that stuff in the tank.

I actually got some of that herbal stuff from Aquatica last night (I went on what Shawn recommended) So I started using it last night... the skimmer and canister filter are off... So anyway we'll see what happens.

I know your frustration. It's happened to me many times, but the notion that some kind of medication will fix an unknown problem is simply not realistic. As you said, you need to discover the source of the problem. Feel free to call me at the number below to expedite this or take the long method by answering these questions about your tank:
Size?
Age?
Inhabitants, including LS, LR and algae?
Filtration?
Lighting?
Water flow?
Temp?
Salinity?
Alk?
Ca?
Pics?

your best and safest bet to save your fish and your mind is to pull them all out. Gobies, tangs you name it. Pull them out and hypo them in a hospital tank for 6 weeks. It's not too much work if you don't lose anymore fish

Tim, What ever happened with the ick problem? I'm currently battling it as well. I have a yellow tang, blue tang, two true perculas, and a yellow and green clown gobies. The blue tang and smaller (newer) perc have it pretty bad though they are still acting normal, and the yellow tang and green clown gobie show a few spots here and there is all. Did the melafix help? or did you pull them out into a hospital tank?
I'm curious to see what I can do as well, since setting up a hospital tank in my office is my last solution to the problem.

Well I lost my foxface, yellow eye, and naso, I'm assuming they were too far gone by the time I started treating my tank... My yellow tang has completely recovered, as has my long nose hawkfish... No one else is showing signs of ich.
I'm mostly happy with the results, I think if I would have started sooner I would have lost less fish... Oh well...
Good luck!
