Ok, after tearing down my 75 gallon I decided to throw up a 45 Show.  Well on the 75 Gallon I just had a Fluval FX5 for a filter with no sump/refugium and it kept balance in the tank flawlessly.  So anyone that argues canisters arent SW worthy are up in the night...  Anywho I digress, I let the Bro-in-Law take the 75 and the FX5 so I am going to give a run at the sump method.  I am taking my tank into Marine Aquatics to get drilled and need some recommendations on what size holes to put in.  I am going to be using a 10 gallon aquarium as a refugium and only want about 150 to 200 GPH flowing thru the sump.  Would half inch be to small for this?  What size pump would be recommended?  Any info would help immensely.  Thanks Everyone...

Yes 1/2" is too small. What size did Eric recommend?

I would pick out a pump first, find out what the diameter of its outlet is, then drill the return hole accordingly.  The draining hole will need to be one size larger.

What would be a good sized pump for the sump and the 45 Gallon?  I dont want a caged up Typhoon if I can avoid it.  Mike, I havent made it into Marine Aquatics yet so I might be a little premature on this post I just dont want to waste a good tank for drilling it wrong.

What type of corals do you want and will you have any flow besides the return pump?

Every and All types of corals and I will have more water movement than the just the return line off the sump, that is why I was looking for something really small just to move minimal amounts of water thru the sump.  I have 2 of the new turbo magnetic powerheads so i have pleanty of current.

Sorry had to edit, the first response sounded really snooty and I didnt want it to come across that way.  Sorry.

Adam,

I think a 1.5" bulkhead would be appropriate. You could move a lot of water through that and you can always throttle it back with a ball valve if necessary.

I was just checking the smaller pumps and it seems like they all use a 1/2" return right up to a Mag 7. I do think you need a much bigger drain though.

1.5" on both Outlet and Inlet?  What size pump would be recommended for this size of sump?  Brand/Model and if anyone has one for sale...

whatever you decide on the return go one size larger on the drain. i think 3/4'' return and 1'' drain would be good, you can always reduce if you want or need too.

Have you browsed the DIY on sumps yet?
There is a great indepth post on the sumps from melev, plus the calculations and pump requirements along with the flow/ volume in plumbing. Just spent the last 2 hours reviewing the information.
