So, I want a smaller office tank, and wonder if you guys think that the following fish would be compatible in a 20-40 gal (size is still up in the air):

Pair of clowns

mated pair of neon gobies

yellow headed jaw fish (maybe mated pair again)

clown gobies (one or more)

someother fish that will hang out in the middle? Firefish?

I'm trying to get decent fish movement, but have all smaller sized fish (5 in max)., and the end # of fish will depend on tank size.

So any opinions on what would work, or work better welcome.

All of those fish are compatible with each other. A small herbivorous Blenny such as a Tailspot Blenny is another good choice. You could also substitute the firefish for a Midas Blenny.

I like blennies, but I also like clams--doesn't the midas like clams?--and the two color blennie I had once wasn't nice to my sps--continually nipped at them to where they didn't grow much.  Even though he had a cool personality.

No problems with Midas blennies and clams or SPS. They are not a "lawnmower" type blenny and not an herbivore.

I also agree on the midas if you can get a smaller one. Also any fang blenny would probably do well. Any algea blenny (lawnmower type mouth) in my opinion has a chance to nip at clam mantels and sps. Shawn at Aquatica has a cool blue and yellow fang blenny in his jbj nano at the front of the store.

It should be noted that a midas blenny (and maybe fang blennies) do not get along with firefish.

I will look into the blennies.  I only really like the helfrichi firefish, but like the orange spot jaw fish I don't feel like paying that much for a fish.

I've never heard of an orange spot jawfish. Do you have any information or pictures?

Has anyone ever tried these fish?  And I'm assuming that they don't do so well in our tanks since they are listed as a cooler water (68-75*) fish?

I've heard horror stories about clown gobies and SPS.

An orange or purple firefish would look awesome.  It doesn't have to be the HelfrichiSmile.

Have you thought about a school of blue-eyed cardinals?  They don't swim a whole lot but school very tightly together.  It will make an awesome sight in a small tank.
If you can't bedazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bs!

catalina gobies are a cold water fish. Normally they don't do well at what I tank temps seem to stay at.

They are beautiful fish but they won't last long at elevated temperatures.

So to revive this thread a little bit, other than one of the vegetarian blennies, anyone know of any other herbivorus (sp?) fish that would do good in a 36" long 40 gal tank?
