I've had a few people asking me where to get Utah Sand and how to clean it.  I've only done it once but I thought I would share how I did it and maybe somebody can suggest better ways.

This link shows has some great information about the sand:

This is page 2 of the topic and it has GPS coordinates:

To sift the sand I just built a small box out of 2x4s and used a window screen:

To clean the sand I used an under the bed storage tub from Walmart.  41Qt  34 3/4" x 16 1/2" x 6".

I then used a garden hose sprayer to spray the sand.  I sprayed using back and forth motions over the entire length of the tub.

Once the tub was full of water I would lift up one end of the tub to dump the water out.  The sand would stay in the bottom of the tub.  I repeated this rinse and dump a total of 4 times.

Dirty Water after 1st rinse:

Dirty Water after 2nd rinse:

Dirty Water after 3rd rinse:

Dirty Water after 4th rinse:

You know have clean sand:

I hope this helps.
If anybody else has different ways please tells us and let us know how it worked!

It looks clean to me. I think it helps it look better too after it is sifted and is uniform size.

The way I do it is a little different.....
I use five gallon buckets.
I do use the screen method to remove all large debris.
I sift about 1 1/2 gals of sand into one bucket.....then put one of those little 3.99 sprinklers from home depot in the bottom and let the water run......It will fill the bucket and overflow the bad stuff...you need to stir the sand using the sprinkler every couple of minutes....{do it on your lawn, that way you water while you work}

I leave one bucket running and go sift another 1 1/2 gals of sand into another bucket....I then make sure that the first bucket is running clear, if it is, then this sand is clean.....

I would suggest letting it all dry out, then rinse it one more time using R/O D/I water...then it would be ready for the tank.......If anyone has any suggestions to improve "our" method we would appreciate it....

Sounds like a great method...I guess to improve my method I could do it on the lawn so I don't waste the water.  Embarrassed
