Topic: Peppermint shrimp eating frogspawn? Posted: June 25 2007 at 11:23am |
I noticed the other day a bit of cotton-like material coming out of my frogspawn and saw a peppermint shrimp darting away. I even saw a polyp, about a half inch long floating away. I started feeding more than just every few days, so now I have to be ready to fight hair algae and cyano. Anyone ever hear of peppermint shrimp going after frogspawns, hammers, or torches?

I'd say it isn't likely.

It wasn't ever a problem in any of my tanks.

If you are target feeding the frogspawn then I would say yes. I had a peppermint shrimp attack my brain coral in an effort to get the food that I had fed to it.

No, I wasn't doing that at the time.
I swore I saw that little devil picking at the frogspawn. Maybe my CB nipped at it and the peppermint shrimp just wanted a piece of the action.

Possible, but most likely the peppermint was eating something the frogspawn regurgitated or the frogspawn was already dying.

I've heard of camel shrimp doing that, but not peppermint.
Strange.

Huh.
One head of the frogspawn is untouched at looks great. The other looks like it's under duress, most likely because it's been munched at by something... :)
Ok, I'll test the waters and see if it's some other culprit. Thanks for the info.

I personally think that your peppermint shrimp is out to get you ... better watch your hands next time you reach in the tank...

Make sure you crush them and not one of their molted skins... they sometimes use decoys to deceive you and then attack when you're least expecting it... They're tricky little buggers!
