So, I've read about the chocolate chip stars not being reef safe.  But I've also read a thread about brittle stars, and lots of people wanting some.  So, what's the deal, are they all reef safe except the chocolate chip?  If not, which ones are good in reefs?  I would like to get some stars to eat the detritus in the little spots on my rock, but I don't want one that I will have to spot feed.

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

Serpent stars and brittle stars are generally considered reef safe. I have both and would prefer to only have serpent stars.

Brittle stars freak me out. I stuck my hand in my overflow once and a brittle star wrapped itself around my wrist. I nearly pulled my tank over trying to get away from the blasted thing.

Stars with long skinny legs = good

Stars with short fat legs = bad

So how about this one?  Liveaquaria says it is reef safe but I still wonder.  I don't know if this one is considered long and skinny or not?

I probably would have knocked my tank over!  Or at least broke my light fixture! Smile That gives me the chills just thinking about it!  I jerk when my cleaner shrimp jumps on my hand!

Buying a Linkia is to sentence it to death. Our reefs cannot feed them properly. They fade away and die.
Brittle and Serpent stars do live well in aquaria, but don't count on them to clean up "detritus in the little spots on the rock". To do that I'd change the direction of powerheads from time to time or just waft the spots with my hand and do a little gravel vacuuming too.Smile

I love my brittlestarfish.  They don't do that much cleaning, but if a fish ever dies, they sure take care of it in a hurry and I don't have to worry about getting it out of the tank or spiking my ammonia.

Okay, I won't get the blue linkia.  I probably will get a brittlestar though.  Do you have to spot feed them?  Do you have to have a screen or something over the tank in order for them not to get out, or will they even try?

I ADORE my serpent star---my class, the janitors, and other teachers--all think it is an octopus regardless of how many times I have told them what it is!  I even have "Serpent Star" in Expo Marker written on the tank!

Definitely cool!

I have an orange fromia that's very active.  Had him for 3 months, no signs of deterioration.  No decreased mass, discoloration, no nothing.  The store I got him from said they had him in their tank for about the same amount of time, so, I count myself as one of the lucky ones.

My serpent is always grabbing onto me too. A little creepy the first time, but he's just a big sweetie! He cuddled Dory with an arm around her for 3 days before she died. Sure he had an ulterior motive, but it looked comforting. Mine green brittle is huge. I do feed him once in a while, but it's not necessary.

Educate. Inspire. Conserve.
