Can the Rio hyper flow pumps be used as a external pump?

I dont think so. Do yourself a favor and buy a mag before waisting your time with hyper flow pumps. They are junk IMO.

I don't know if I would say they are "Junk", but I MUCH prefer my Danner Mag Drives over my Rio Hyperflow.  Mag's are well worth the extra cost.

People say they are but the ones I have/had have not been.  I currently have a 2.5,3,12 and 18 and they are all quite.  The 2.5 is running externally on my calcium reactor with no noticeable noise.  Those that have them and say they are noisy probably need a new impeller.

I agree.  I have a Mag 24 for a return and it is not very noisy at all.

I also have a Mag 36 that needs a new impeller that sounds like an airplane.

Noise is very subjective.  I had a Mag 3 and considered it quite. That is until I got a Quite One 4000. The QO pumps 3 times as much watter and is much quieter than the Mag. The QO also uses only 40% more power than the Mag 3 while maintaining 300% more water flow.

Mags are good pumps, I just think there are better options out there.

I like the Seios but I thought they were made by Taam.

That would explain it. It surprises me though. I have read many complaints about Rio Pumps and only praise for Seio.
