Topic: sump help Posted: November 30 2003 at 9:26pm |
I cracked the bottom of my sump (Glass) about 3 months ago. Big Time!!
I repaired it using marine silocone this has worked great for 2 months. Now its leaking again
I pulled it out dryed it off , cleaned the bottom of the tank and put silocone ( All Glass black) on the entire crack as well as aroung the border of the bottom.
I then attached a peice of plexi glass to the bottom and let dry for 24 hours.
Now a day later its back to leaking. I am willing to do just about anything to fix it.
Is there anyone reliable I could pay to replace the bottom glass? Is there any other options? Should I just replace the whole thing? I cannot have it leak and I cant keep experimenting. Its to much work and not good for the tank.

Are you sure the leak is in the bottom? Sometimes the stress from
the break can crack a seal elsewhere......
We had a stress leak in an older hex tank. I tried 3 times to fix the
seal before we turned it into a terrarium!
If you decide to get a new one, consider making it yourself out of
acrylic. It's really easy and you can customize it to your stand to
make it as big as you want (but maybe you'll want to leave room for
shelves...).

I agree with the above. The glass has already been weakened and therefore the entire structure is comprimised. If you decide to replace just the bottom piece, it may end up costing you more than it would to get a new one unless you can do it yourself. However, do not expect that the crack will not get larger as your tank expands and contracts. This will also affect any type of seal that you try to use as a bandaid. Good luck!
PS. maybe it's the karma from hoarding all of that rock!

I am tired of putting a bandaid on this thing. I cant have it leak again. However I sont have enogh cash to run out and buy a new one with xmas and all that.
I had one friend suggest removing the bottom peice of broken glass and replacing it with plexi glass. Any thoughts on that?

I have found many a tank at the D.I. What dimensions does it need to be and I can keep my eye out.
Of course the thrifty sump, the kind I always use, is a plastic tub. They come in so many sizes you are sure to find the right one in your stocking, err.. under the tree, I mean near your aquarium this Christmas!

You know Bruce, Mark does make a valid point. It is certainly a viable option at this point and I would trust it a hundred-fold more than plexi and silicone. It's still a bandaid, but a cheap one!

I had a problem with my acrylic sump a while back and while it was being repaired I used a plastic tub as Mark advises. It worked great! If it were a little bigger I probably would have left it in place rather than replacing it with the acrylic again, but I felt the tub I had was a little small.

Well its fixed. Thanks a ton to Marcus who helped me out.
We removed the dividers then cut a peice of plexi glass to the perfect size ( I mean you could have used this to calibrate ). Then siliconed it in replaced the dividers and It hasnt leaked since.

You are more than welcome Bruce! Thanks for the nice compliments... I am glad that its working like it should. Now its time for that canopy and lighting to have an adjustment. Let me know when and we'll knock it out.
