Topic: Phosban Reactor ? Posted: June 28 2006 at 11:40pm |
So for you phosban reactor users...
How much water do you have flowing through them? Does it seem to trickle out the other side and barely move the media, or do you have your media fluidized?
Also, what media are you using.
Thanks

I just have a rio 900 running mine. The media is fluidized and I run Seachems "Seagel" in it. It's a 50/50 mix of carbon and phosban. On my big tank the reactor is fed by the overflow, I would guess it is running about 100gallons an hour through it. (but I'm guessing and it is a lot larger reactor.) I'm just running A/C through it right now.

The media in mine is mostly fluidized. I have been alternating running carbon and phosban.

With the Two Little Fishies product it clearly states that you need a very slow flow in the media. It states that the media should not fluidize, but only percolate on the top half inch.
I've heard some people (Holdencraft) say that the T.L.F. media is a better media to use. But I'm wondering if he (and others) really have their flow turned down that low?

I'm running little Rio 240gph through a UV sterilizer and then through the phosban reactor, on three of my 4 tanks( trying to grow a planted tank with the 4th) It is enough flow to cause the media to stir slightly with out fluidizing. If it fluidizees, it will grind to a powder and end up in your tank. I know from experience. My return line empties into my filter sock so I can see exactly what and how much is being ground up. I am useing the little fishes media. I personally like there media.

I just bought 2 Phosban reactors from Premium Aquatics and they should arrive tomorrow. I plan on running RowaPhos in one of them and Seachem Matrix Carbon in the other. I'm going to try using the same small $12 fountain pump from Home Depot that I use in my auto topoff system. If I remember correctly I think its only about a 130 gph pump. I haven't decided if I'm going to just use one pump and run the output of one into the input of the other or give each one its own pump yet. I emailed Fountain Tech to see if these little pumps are safe for use in saltwater but haven't heard back from them yet.

When Julian was here he made it vary clear to me that this was the best way to run the reactor. With more flow the media tends to break up over time and enter the aquarium.

I actually looked at mine last night. The media is percolating about 1 inch form the top. I bought and Azoo powerhead (super cheap) to run my reactor.

I haven't heard back from Fountain Tech, but I found some similar units on Ebay and they all say not for use in saltwater. Too bad the flow rate would have probably been just about right. I'll have to figure something else out.
