A recent thread made me think that we could all benefit from a discussion of what are the most important supplements for a reef tank? a fish only tank?

As you all may know from my posts in the thread Secrets of an Affordable Reef Aquarium  Alk and Ca are my favorites. But does everyone else agree? What are the others? Order of priority?

I agree with Mark.

Calcium and alk.
And feed the fish (coral will get some leftovers).

All I add on top of what is mentioned above is iodine (since I run a lot of carbon 24/7). The order of priority would be Ca, Alk and maybe Iodine.

I also add magnesium. I could likely just do water changes though.

I'd say the most important additive i put in my water is salt. I don't add anything else really; I just do regular water changes. If i had an SPS tank, it would be different... Id add Ca/Alk
